Hi.

I’m sorry to bother you as I know it’s not really your domain, but one of my employees has been harassed (?) by a client and I’m not sure how to handle. Do you mind if I forward you the communication and some of the background to get your opinion?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Liz.

You never have to apologize. You are not a bother, ever, so please get that out of your head. I am here to help in any way that I can. Please feel free to send me any of the contextual information and any support you have and I’ll take a look.

Thanks so much.

Gina,

As discussed, please take a look at the below and let me know what you think. Happy to hop on a call if that works best.

Appreciate you.

Good afternoon,

This is a re-cap about a call I had with Mr. Wiley, the client on the SharePoint case.

I received the voicemail below when I was in a meeting with Bradley and subsequently called Mr. Wiley back. I placed the call around 4:00 PM.

We discussed the revisions he wanted to the presentation and I advised that I was happy to make them, but I needed a little time to secure the appropriate approvals.

I advised that we have an approval process that includes fact checkers and legal review, as well as creative approval.

His response (and I quote) was: “That’s bullshit, the changes I want are none of anyone’s damn business.”

I was obviously taken aback but explained the reasoning behind the layer of approvals, much of which revolves around protecting him and his interests.

He then said: “You don’t need any damn approvals to change MY presentation, and you better get me the revised presentation, or I will come to your house and shoot you!”

At this time, experiencing a significant level of panic, I did embolden my voice and advised that his sentiment was completely inappropriate, and I would not tolerate that kind of threatening behavior. In fact, I shared with him that a continuation of that behavior would force me to terminate the phone call. Admittedly, I believe that I sounded stronger than I felt.

He seemed to calm down a bit, and apologized to me, admitting that he likely shouldn’t have threatened me. I eked out an acceptance of his apology, though I wasn’t feeling all that warm and fuzzy, and ended the phone call. To say I was shaken is an understatement.

To state the obvious, my office location is shared in my signature block, and I believe my home address is available via a quick Google search.

I then called Brad and Sarah, copied hereto, to share the story.

I have included a transcript of the voicemail that led to the conversation I am describing below.

Please let me know how you think I should proceed.

Thank you.

Yes, this is Shep Wiley calling. I’m trying to get this whole presentation issue settled. Calling to ask you a question. Why the hell do I need approval from other people to have changes made to my presentation. Please get back to me as soon as possible. To be clear I will contact you or attempt to contact you every hour on the hour until we get connected. I’ve already talked about this more than I would ever want to and I don’t want to be a problem. You should know that I’m the kind of guy that can become a problem and I don’t want to be. A big problem. A problem you don’t want. So yeah. Call me.

Gina: I’m obviously going to respond to your email, but this is fucking gross.

Liz: Yeah, no shit. I really wanted to write to you: We’re going to burn Mr. Wiley’s house to the ground; we ride at dawn.

Gina: Is Chris okay?

Liz: I mean, yeah. She’s a tough bitch, but also, no. Would you be?

Gina: No.

Gina: I’m also pissed because this is not the first time something like this has happened and last time, we did nothing.

Liz, It goes without saying, but this kind of communication from a client is completely inappropriate. If it were up to me, I’d want to terminate the client relationship immediately, but obviously, these are not my decisions to make. If you are okay with it, I’d like to escalate internally and make a recommendation that we transmit a strongly worded communication to Mr. Wiley advising that he is not permitted to engage with Christina, or anyone who works here, like that, again.

Let me know.

Thanks.

Oh, and I’m sorry.

Tell Christina I’m sorry, too.

Liz,

I spoke with a few folks “upstairs” last night and they agreed to allow me to communicate with Mr. Wiley regarding his behavior.

Can you please forward me his email address as I think I prefer a written communication over a telephone call?

Thanks so much.

G.

Liz: ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? Why the FUCK are you responsible for speaking to Mr. Wiley? I’m pretty sure that he was brought in by a particularly awful suit on the 12th floor.

Gina: It’s fine.

Liz: It’s not.

Gina: It’s not, but it is what it is. I got you.

Liz: You always do, but that’s not the point.

Liz,

I had a brief but productive email exchange with Mr. Wiley. He apologized immediately and advised that he would outreach Christina to offer an apology. I did stress that while I appreciated his apology (and certainly thought it appropriate that he apologize to Christina), my communication was intended to be a notice, and that future transgressions, or unprofessional behavior, would be met with escalation that could include termination of the relationship and the involvement of law enforcement, as needed.

If Christina doesn’t feel comfortable working with Mr. Wiley from this point forward, I have secured approval to reassign her to a new account and secure Mr. Wiley a new rep.

Happy to chat about this further if you have any questions.

Let me know.

Thanks.

G.

G,

Thank you so much. I know that I can speak for Christina, as well, when I say that the entire team is grateful for your quick attention to this matter.

I think for the time being Christina wants to stay with Mr. Wiley. I don’t fully understand, but also, I do. I’m sure you do too.

I’ll keep you apprised if anything else pops up.

Have a great rest of your day.

Thanks again- I owe you one.

L.

Liz: How bad was it?

Gina: Fine.

Liz: Liar.

Gina: That motherfucker suggested sending Chris a gift to make it up to her. Fed me some bullshit about how men are…like you know, right? We are all just so volatile. I refused to give him an inch but kindly requested that he refrain from sending Chris a gift. Advised that I didn’t think that would be appropriate. He was surprised, of course.

Liz: Unreal.

Gina: Is it tho?

Liz: No.

Gina: I have to run- I desperately need a coffee before my next seventeen meetings. Call me later.

Liz: Appreciate you.

Gina: Ditto. Also- fuck Mr. Wiley. Fuck all of them.

Liz: Yeah. Fuck all of them. TTYL.
